MITAFRIKA
BUSINESS FORUM

What does Africa offer for German small and medium-sized enterprises?

Germany’s perspective on the African continent is distorted: The focus is on wars and crises, disasters and diseases. Yet unnoticed by the general public, many African countries are experiencing an unprecedented economic boom and innovation surge. On his trips to many African countries, Christian Hiller von Gaertringen has observed the emergence of a new, self-confident middle class: Countless start-up companies are operating successfully, training conditions have improved, sometimes massively, and there are completely new opportunities for advancement. The German economy runs the risk of missing this upswing with all its opportunities for new trade relations. – A plea for genuine economic cooperation instead of development aid.

Is Africa’s potential really great? Why Africa? Which business areas are particularly attractive for German companies? What needs to be done to provide better access for German companies in Africa? What are the risks?

The role of diasporas in building sustainable economic relations with Africa

The past decade has changed both perception and reality in Africa. Companies are thriving; from telecommunications and banking to agriculture and mining, attracted by the continent’s emerging middle class and natural resources. Despite the challenges, the continent has become a beacon of hope and part of the solution to a world facing ever-increasing challenges. Africa has the potential to be the world’s largest growth driver in the coming decades, but unfortunately German companies are still hesitant to enter this dynamic market.
What contribution can African companies in the diaspora make to sustainable mutual socio-economic prosperity in relations between Africa and Germany?
What are African companies in the Diaspora doing to change the distorted picture of the African continent?
