Germany’s perspective on the African continent is distorted: The focus is on wars and crises, disasters and diseases. But unnoticed by the general public, many African countries are experiencing an unprecedented economic boom and a surge in innovation. On his travels to many African countries, Christian Hiller von Gaertringen has observed the emergence of a new, self-confident middle class: Countless start-up companies are working successfully, apprenticeships have improved massively in some cases, and there are completely new opportunities for advancement. The German economy runs the risk of missing out on this upswing with all its opportunities for new trade relations. – A plea for genuine economic cooperation instead of development aid.
